Planning a skincare consultation around your goals

Prepare a useful picture of your routine and priorities before discussing skincare or cosmetic treatment.

A skincare consultation is easier to navigate when you can explain the concern you want to address. You might be seeking help with breakouts, irritation, uneven tone or the appearance of your skin. Start with your experience rather than a product trend, and bring questions that will help you understand a proposed plan.

Describe your routine and priorities

Make a simple morning and evening list of the products you use. Note how often you use each one, when you started it and any changes you noticed afterward. Photographing labels can be easier than carrying every bottle. Include previous procedures and the results you remember.

Pick one or two priorities for the appointment. Be specific about what bothers you and what would make a difference to daily life. Mention whether a long routine is difficult to maintain or whether you have a particular budget or upcoming event. Those details give the discussion useful context.

Bring up irritation and past reactions

Tell the clinician about products that caused redness, itching, stinging or swelling, and bring their names if you know them. The AAD explains that skincare products can irritate the skin and that identifying a reaction's cause may sometimes require medical patch testing. Ask how to assess new products safely for your situation. Read the AAD's guidance on testing skincare products.

Rather than guessing which ingredient was responsible, describe what happened and when. If you have earlier photographs or medical records relating to the concern, ask whether they would be useful to review.

Understand a proposed treatment before deciding

If a cosmetic procedure is discussed, ask why it is suitable, what other choices exist and how the clinician's experience relates to your skin tone and concern. Discuss likely improvement, potential complications, the number of appointments, recovery requirements and the full estimated cost. The AAD recommends addressing these topics during a cosmetic consultation. Read the AAD's cosmetic treatment question guide.

Before leaving, ask for a written routine or treatment summary with clear follow-up arrangements. Check which questions remain unanswered and take time to consider the options. A useful visit should leave you understanding the proposed next step.
