How to prepare for your first hair and skin consultation

A simple way to organise your concerns, medical history and questions before your first visit.

The Lumeraa Aesthetics clinical team

Your first consultation is a chance to explain what has been bothering you and understand the next steps. A little preparation can make the conversation easier. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or a preferred treatment; start with what you have noticed and what you would like help with.

Write down the story so far

Make a short note of when the concern started, where it appears and how it has changed. For example, you might describe increased shedding, a patch of thinning, recurring breakouts or a product that seems to irritate your skin. Dates can be approximate. Put your main concern first so it gets discussed even if you have several questions.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends bringing your questions, a list of medicines and supplements, relevant family medical history and any previous test results. Include treatments you have already tried and what happened while using them. Read the AAD's appointment preparation guidance.

Make the appointment practical

Before travelling, check the appointment time, location and any preparation instructions with the clinic. Ask whether you should bring existing reports or product packaging. If your concern is on an area covered by clothing, choose something that will let you show it comfortably.

For a skin examination, ask about arriving without makeup on the area being assessed. The AAD notes that a clear view of bare skin helps the examination. You can bring what you need to remove makeup at the appointment. See the AAD's preparation advice.

Leave with a clear next step

Keep space in your notes for the answers. Ask what the examination suggests, whether more information is needed and what the available next steps involve. Explain your budget, schedule and priorities so the discussion reflects your everyday life.

Before leaving, confirm which instructions apply to you, how to arrange follow-up and whom to contact if you need clarification. Request a written summary if that would help you remember the plan.
